AUCKLAND WORKSHOP
A short course covering the basics of traditional and contemporary japanese plastering.

Schedule
Day 1 - 15th Feb
AM - Presentation on history and context of japanese plastering. Science behind japanese plastering.
PM -  Demonstration of preparation and application of brown coat onto traditional bamboo lattice. Demonstration of traditional and modern plastering tools and techniques with an opportunity to practice application.
Day 2 - 16th Feb
AM - Presentation on advanced finishes - specifically Shikkui plaster
PM - Demonstration of Shikkui Plaster application and finishing techniques

PORT CHARLES WORKSHOP
A longer course covering the basics skills required to make and apply japanese plasters from scratch and the production of bamboo lattices as support structure for plaster.

Schedule
DAY 1 - Mon 17th Feb
5PM onwards - Orientation, dinner and getting to know each other. Presentation in Farmhouse Library.
DAY 2 - Tues 18th Feb
AM  - Presentation on Japanese Plastering history and context. Basic brown coat mixes and demonstration of application.
PM - Practice mixing and application of brown coat on practice frames.
Evening  - presentation on various traditional natural buildings from around the world ~20min
DAY 3 - Wed 19th Feb
AM Farm tour + finding and preparation of clay on site for use in plastering.
PM Building Bamboo Lattices for frame.
Evening - presentation on properties and uses bamboo. ~20 min
DAY 4 - Thurs 20th Feb
AM - Finish Bamboo Lattices and attach to structure.
PM - Brown coat plastering on Lattices
DAY 5 - Fri 21st Feb
AM - Finish coat plastering - Shikkui mixes and application demonstration.
PM - Finish coats on practice boards.
DAY 6 - Sat 22nd Feb
AM - Apply Finish Coats to structure. Course Feedback.

About Kyle
Kyle works as a plasterer, researcher and educator in Japan specializing in Permaculture systems and natural building materials such as straw bale and natural plasters.
Kyle has studied natural farming in Japan, permaculture in Australia, and organic and biodynamic farming in the US.
In 2004, Kyle completed a Permaculture Teachers' Training at Crystal Waters Ecovillage, Australia, and has taught Permaculture Design Courses at Daruma EcoFarm, Thailand and Permaculture AWA, Japan.
In 2011 Kyle completed a PhD in bioresource sciences at Nihon University researching the hygrothermal environment of straw bale walls and building practices to prevent moisture damage. He has led the construction of over 10 straw bale buildings in Japan and was also instrumental in building the first light straw clay (2013) and light rice husk clay (2016) buildings in Japan.
Kyle is a graduate of the Kyoto Plastering Institute and in 2016 became the first westerner in Japan to achieve the rank of first degree plasterer (highest nationally recognized).
In 2017, Kyle founded Permaculture Center Kamimomi in Okayama, Japan. Permaculture Center Kamimomi hosts regular workshops in natural building, no-till organic rice farming and Permaculture systems. https://www.facebook.com/PermacultureKamimomi
