Shikkui Finish with Gypsum Moulding Boarder

Continuing from Modifying and Securing Gypsum Mouldings, once the GL Bond has set up and the mouldings are secure, the nakanuri, or brown coat of earthen plaster can be applied.
Tape mouldings

10mm space to apply nakanuri in two coats
First application, roughly 6mm
3-4mm gap

Allow to dry

Apply second coat and allow to dry

Sunajikkui for a scratch coat over the earthen plaster, consisting of Shikkui, sand and additional seaweed glue.

Apply thin scratch coat

As the Sunajikkui sets up, move material from wet, moist areas to drier areas.  Before the Sunajikkui dries, apply two coats of Shikkui.

Shikkui consists of hydrated lime, seaweed glue and hemp fibers

First application of Shikkui

Again, as the Shikkui sets up, move material from wet, moist areas to drier areas.

After setting up but before drying, apply the second coat of Shikkui.

 Lightly compress while moist

Avoid compression after the second coat has set up

Repeat process in the larger area

Again, lightly compress with a honyaki trowel while moist.
And again, avoid compression after setting up

Thatch Roofing in Miyama-cho, Kyoto Prefecture 茅葺屋根 京都府美山町

Miyama-cho in northern Kyoto Prefecture is one of the few remaining locations in Japan where the tradition of thatch roofing continues.  Other popular locations are Shirakawago in Gifu Prefecture and Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture.
Miyama is home to a number of professional roof thatchers, including one of Japan's largest roof thatching companies, Miyama Kayabuki. Another Miyama organization promoting roof thatching in Japan is Kayabukiya.
This past summer the Miyama Thatch Roof Resource Center was re-thatched by Nishio-san.

Modifying and Securing Gypsum Mouldings

Using the straight and circular mouldings described in the previous post, the following describes how to cut and secure gypsum mouldings.

Measure the distance of the desired moulding and cut the moulding at a 45 degree angle using a miter box.
Check cut to ensure a 45 degree angle
Mark finish level with an ink-line
Check fit of all mouldings, preferably at the same time to ensure clean joints

Treat the back of the mouldings with a sealer to slow the absorption of moisture
 Paint on with brush
 Prepare gypsum based bonding plaster
Add methylcellulose to improve workability and delay hardening
Dry mix GL bond and methylcellulose, then add water
Firmly apply a thin coat of GL Bond, then apply in thick globs
Wet plaster, firmly apply a thin coat of GL Bond to the base coat, and then set moulding
 First the bottom, then sides
 Lastly, top.
 Check joints
 Adjust joints if needed.
Set the circular moulding: In this case, equal spacing on sides and top.
Ensure circular moulding is at the same level as the surrounding mouldings
 Check horizontally and diagonally
Imperfections can be corrected with paintbrushes and plaster.
Dip the brush in water and the edge of the gypsum powder, and correct the moulding

 After correction
